"I always knew I just wanted to paint,
but that doesn’t mean it is any less daunting.
"

An interview with Andrea Kemp

How do you feel about being classified stylistically as a specific type of artist, or are you?
Normally people tend to peg me as a “realist.” I will say that when people come to learn more about my philosophy and approach to my work, they find that it is a blend of both the abstract and literal. In fact, I feel a good basis for any of my work comes from the abstract. I can appreciate many styles and intellectual approaches to art, even if it is not the approach I take.

What artist, movement, or historic time period has had the greatest influence on your art?
It is not certain time periods in art history that influence me the most, but specific artists. As a whole, “The Dutch Golden Age” is what I am drawn to most often. Some would say this was a movement when artist’s work became more representational, but I think it became more abstract in some ways. The work from this time had incredible light and dark patterns, which is a huge departure from the very romantic Baroque style of painting that had been taking place in southern Europe during the same time period.

After mastering your craft, or the technical aspects of your art form, how did you find your own voice—the unique, identifiable signature that sets you apart from other artists?
This something I am just beginning to do. I will always be mastering my craft and extending my versatility with my medium. Recently, I decided to make a conscience effort to stop looking at other artists while painting, unless there is something I must see in order to proceed with my own work. This, I believe this has helped my work find its own voice.

What have been your greatest challenges as an artist?
The greatest challenge for me has been to have the patience to see my work through, and the persistence to keep going when my work is not living up to my expectations. I always knew I just wanted to paint, but that doesn’t mean it is any less daunting.
