General Information

We are located in the West Washington Park neighborhood in the heart of Denver, between Speer Blvd and Broadway on 2nd and Grant St.

Most of our classes are taught in the historic Sherman School and annex buildings located at –

We anticipate an adjustment to building hours when we reopen. Please continue to check our website for updates.

There are two small parking areas, one to the south and one to the north of ASLD’s property. Parking is first come, first serve at all times.

Free street parking is also available. However, please pay attention to adjacent parking signs and restricted times during street sweeping the first week of each month, April-November.

Membership

You may purchase your membership in one of three ways:

In person – Stop by our registration office in Denver at 200 Grant Street, and work with our staff to open an account and start your membership. You may purchase a membership with credit card, cash, or check.

Over the phone – Call our registration office at 303-778-6990 x0 to work with our staff to open an account and start your membership. You may purchase your membership using a credit card.

Online (Recommended) –

  • For NEW members: Go to the Login page and select “Create an Account.” Follow the on-screen instructions to fill in your name and contact information. Be sure to save your username and password in a place you can remember. Finish setting your preferences under the “My Account” tab.

All of ASLD’s activities are supported by membership fees, tuition, donations and grants to provide an environment for world-class instruction by professional working artists, cultural engagement, and community outreach throughout the Denver Metro area.

All membership levels include:

  • Discounted tuition for classes
  • Access to open figure studies
  • Access to use open painting/drawing studios (excludes Ceramics Studio, Print Room and Fiber Arts Lab)
  • Library borrowing privileges
  • Exclusive invitations to special events and calls for entry

Classes & Workshops

Use the SEARCH feature to help narrow courses for a specific medium or find a class taught by a specific instructor. Click the link on the course title to view more information about the instructor, course objectives, required materials, and ability level.

For more personalized help, please call the registration office at 303-778-6990 x0 to talk with any of our registration staff, who can answer questions and help you determine what types of courses meet your interests and ability.

Yes! We’ve structured our scholarship program to ensure arts education is accessible to all segments of the community. Visit the BIG HeART SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM page to learn who qualifies and to download an application form.

In general, we recommend bringing an apron and paper towels with you to any class you take at ASLD.

You can also find specific requirements for course materials by checking what is listed under each course description online. We recommend using COURSES AT-A-GLANCE to find to the course title, and follow the link to view the course description and required materials list. If no materials are listed, then everything will be supplied for you in class or explained to you by the instructor during your first class.

Often, as the start date for your course approaches, instructors will send an email with instructions or special materials to have prepared before class begins. Please make sure you check your spam and junk folders to be sure you don’t miss any messages.

The minimum age for adult courses is 18. Some instructors may allow students aged 16–17 to participate with a waiver.

Yes! We offer ongoing courses for youth ages 6–17 in the Fall (August–December) and Spring (January–May). Summers are filled with week-long KidART CAMPS & TEEN STUDIOS.

To find youth courses currently being offered, use the SEARCH feature on the registration page. Navigate to the “Medium” drop-down menu to find “Youth and Teen.”

If your class has been cancelled for any reason, one of our registration staff members will call to notify you, and we will send an email notification to announce the cancellation. You may also call the registration office at 303-778-6990 x0 to speak with someone regarding cancellations.

Please visit the HOLIDAY SCHEDULE page to see dates that ASLD will be closed.  Be sure to also check open studio closures during weeks when no classes are in session.

You may contact Katie Johnson, Registration Staff Supervisor, or Rachel Basye, Executive Director, with feedback about your classes. You may also leave a letter with staff at the Registration office.

Please note that there are some “Call to Register” classes. You will need call our registration office for these classes.

  • Students enrolling for a workshop are required to pay for all scheduled classes at the time of registration. Workshops cannot be prorated.
  • Membership is required for a few of our programs, such as Open Figure Study and Youth Summer Camps.
  • The minimum age for adult courses is 18. Some instructors may allow students aged 16-17 to participate with a waiver.

Guide to Student Ability Levels

Beginner 
Students have limited or no experience in the fundamentals of art or in a specific art medium.
Intermediate
Students have a good foundation in the fundamentals of art including the principles of design and composition, and a level of proficiency in the technical aspects of a given medium.
Advanced
Students have technical mastery of a given medium and the fundamentals of art, and are interested in cultivating and exploring a personal aesthetic.
All Levels 
Students from experienced beginners to advanced will have individualized instruction within the given structure and definition of the class. A range of student abilities will be represented.

Unfortunately, gift certificates are not available at this time.

Instead, you are welcome to purchase a gift membership or gift registration for a friend or relative. Please call or visit the registration office to work with our registration staff to process this gift purchase.
